Things That Matter

lyrics

Don't I know I've been gone so long, but I'm back 'cos I just can't carry on.
So many people in this world that I can't help, and you know I just can't help myself.
And I haven't known hardship like some people that I've met. That don't mean my problems should matter any less,
I'm a summation of my experience and that's all I'll ever be.
that's why the things that matter to you are different for me.

Child of alcoholics never had much of a home, so at the tender age of 16 said "I can make it on my own".
And then she wound up selling her body to men who'd want to pay just to take her innocence away.
And she never talked of hardship even after all these years, countless sleepless nights, and too many stifled tears.
She just smokes a lot of dope, and drinks a lot of tea saying "the things that matter to you are different for me".

I met some rich kids for whom the guilt had got too much, so they cut up all their clothes and they stopped washing their hair.
Now they roam from town to town on mommy and daddy's dime, preaching the gospel of living how they never had to.
'Cos they wouldn't know hardship if it ripped out their dreads, melted out their spacers and gave them battle jackets that read.
"I am a product of my privilege, and that's all I'll ever be" that's why the things that matter to you are different for me.

I used to live for the spaces in between, the gaps they got so big, they swallowed me.
I took a trip and it changed the way I felt, said find a home and learn to accept yourself.

High flying lawyer lived a rich and happy life, but he paid in the end with much sickness and much strife when they found 6 different cancers, that they could not take out. And in spite of all his money, he was done for without a doubt.
But he never spoke of hardship even as those cancers grew. He just occupied his time in caring for everybody he knew.
And he drank away his last days in a hotel by the sea saying the things that matter to you are different for me...
